YCUSD Goes Solar!

Yuba City Unified School District (YCUSD) has officially begun the first phase of construction on a year-long solar energy project that will bring renewable power to 12 YCUSD schools. This initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce energy costs and minimize environmental impact across Sutter County. Once completed, the project is expected to generate 7.1 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy annually and save the school district an estimated $30 million over the next 30 years. Full project completion is expected by April 2026.
“We are very excited about this solar project,” said Doreen Osumi, Superintendent of Yuba City Unified School District. “Our district is committed to reducing operational costs that will allow us to enhance our educational opportunities for our students, as well as fostering a healthier environment for our entire community by doing our part to reduce carbon emissions.”
In partnership with energy solutions firm sitelogiQ, which will oversee the installation of the solar panels, construction will start this month at Andros Karperos Middle School and Butte Vista Elementary. The remaining ten schools will undergo construction on a rolling basis, pending the approval of individual site engineering plans.
Each school is expected to undergo six to nine weeks of construction. Most of the solar panels will be installed on elevated structures above parking lots to provide added shaded parking areas. During construction, parking availability will be impacted. Parents, staff, and community members are encouraged to contact their school’s administration for specific details on parking lot closures, construction timelines, and site-specific updates.
